ok so i have had many pistol shrimp and never had problems like this BUT i had a mantis shrimp once and he would crack snails and they looked just like that.

I lost a lot of snails and when deep cleaning the sand bed I found most all the shells. I do see the goby grab a snail and bring it back to the cave.

mom guessing he kills them to help dam the burrow

yeah they do bring shells back into the burrow but if that was the case then i think this one wuld be under ground unless he dug it up for the photo. I just know that i had mantis shrimp and they will make a pop pop pop sound until they crack the shell open and then if you look you should be able to find a shell that looks like the picture but it could be something else.

I didn’t see half the snail shell missing. I don’t think a pistol could do that

yes i agree it looks like something smashed into the shell, i dont think pistol shrimp would do that.

Did you add a pistol shrimp into the tank or are you just hearing popping and you think its a pistol shrimp? I ask because mantis shrimp and pistol shrimp sound similair

Yup! My tiger kills snails every once in a while. He even stunned a firefish that swam into his cave.

Thats interesting, fish and shrimp have different personalities maybe the ones i got were less hungery for shrimp.

Also had the same experience with a tiger pistol shrimp.
It was all fun and games when it was small but when it grew it turned into an assassin.
Snail shells near the cave and saw it stun my tang took it into the cave before I could do anything.

I remove a snail shell every now and then ... I must admit I had several becose they just reproduce like rabbits. I too realized the shells appears to be broken at the same place ... maybe did they lack in calcium or something .
When the snails were very young (a year ago) i had a dragons breath macro outbreak... they all had some on them shells ... maybe the roots found their way inside the shells ?? ...
Today is a silent day though , my pistol shrimp has shed her carapace ;Smug
