Ok, so I dropped food into my tank today, and not long after while everything was mobile, A few nassarius snails grouped in a corner. My P.shrimps hole is about 3 inches from here.... He then pops out and drags the snails one by one down into his hole..... is this normal???? Do you think he is killing them?

i found this idk if its the kind you have but look under diet

Other Common NamesRed Banded Pistol Shrimp, Randall's Pistol Shrimp DescriptionThe Candy Stripe Pistol Shrimp is one of the brightest of the pistol shrimps. The most fascinating thing about this animal is the symbiotic relationship it shares with watchman/shrimp gobies. Their name comes from the loud cracking noise made by their large claw.DietSome prefer live foods like small snails while others will eat small meaty bits of food.

Color: The Pistol Shrimp (Assorted) has a varied color.

Size: The Pistol Shrimp (Assorted) may grow to 2 inches.

Diet: Carnivore.

Feeding: It likes to eat eats meaty bits of seafood, and detritus.

Behavior: The Synalpheus species is generally peaceful toward other tankmates.

Care: Many consider the Synalpheus species a low-maintenance specimen. Not venomous.

Acclimation: Most Invertebrates, including snails require very long and slow drip acclimation process of at least 2 hours as they cannot adjust quickly to even small changes in pH, temperature, alkalinity and other parameters. Like all snails, this species is intolerant of extreme nitrate levels (over 20) and cannot live in tanks that have had copper-based medications dispensed.

General notes: The Pistol shrimp is best know for the symbiotic relationship in which it shares with shrimp gobies. Will eat most any food. This shrimp is usually heard and rarely seen as the `snapping` sound is the shrimps way of warding off any nosey trespassers into it`s burrow. It makes this sound with a special appendage and can punch holes in crustacean exoskeletons. Water parameters: Keep water quality high (SG 1.023 - 1.025, pH 8.1 - 8.4, Temp. 72 - 78° F).

Yes it is normal, i had a pistol with my yellow watchman goby and i lost all of my snails and some hermits....a bad mistake on my part but one of the most interesting creatures iv'e kept ever....:)

My hermits lived in constant fear. I just removed my pistol, the larger he became the more aggressive he got. For my hermits it was like "Nightmare on Elm St" every day. I do not think I lost any hermits to the pistol, but every day he would pop outa no where and drag some poor hermit under the rock.

Mine will eat small snails at times but it's not too often since my Yashia goby actually brings it out to eat when I feed.

my pistol was a frag thief lol took a long time for me to catch on but frags kept disappearing final straw was a superman monti back when they were still fairly high end I started looking for it stuck my hand in a cave found it dead of course. put my hand in found more frags all dead then snap. snap it was at that moment I decided that pistol had to find a new home he thought all my corals needed no light and no flow. i have talked to others with similar problems

hahah thats no good at all! i have problems with my hermits knocking all my frags over so now anything thats not very big has to be put on my frag rack!

Yup, hermits will eat shrimps/crabs/etc, they'll rearrange anything you leave loose on the sandbed, they'll dig holes all over the tank ... they're SO worth it though. :)
