so after i get a new light i really want to get a goby pair, and a pistol shrimp with them would be super cool, i head pistol shrimps can be annoying. are they worth it?
i also accidentally put this in the emergency area, apologies if any of you misclicked

I have one and the symbiotic relationship between these 2 critters is what fascinates most people when I point it out in my tank. I love my pair, very intriguing to watch. I have a Randalls pistol shrimp paired with a Yellow watchman goby.

In terms of annoyance, the goby and shrimp CAN be annoying by throwing sand on corals, however it hasn't been an issue for me.
You'll hear the shrimp snap, mostly at night... but I wouldn't say its annoying, to me its hardly noticeable unless your tank is in your room.

I would tell you to be weary if you didn't put your rock structure down prior to the sand when you set up your tank. Your pair could start digging under rocks and find themselve crushed..

I would also get a candycane pistol shrimp. They stay small and don't dig up as much as bigger ones. Mine stays in probably a 1 square foot radius, but you don't get to choose the radius :P

I have a pair of Randall’s and a candy cane pistol shrimp.

I also have a pink spot that hangs near a second candy cane pistol shrimp.

The sand disturbance from the 2 candy canes is teaspoons at most at any time.

In my last tank I had a tiger pistol shrimp. I ended up tearing half the rock work out to catch the shrimp. It was a disaster. That shrimp was aptly named “Bob the Builder”.

Now if I had a tank and was not keeping anything on the sand bed or at the rock bases, I would have a tiger pistol again.

+1. Also they're a fascinating addition to watch especially once they pair with their goby

I love my pistol/Goby pair. They hide in the back so sand is not a problem. Downside to that is I don’t see them often. The only irritation I have is that the shrimp will kill my snails and hermits if they get too close. But, still, that’s minimal.

I would get a tiger pistol. They are messier, but have a cool relationship with the Goby.

My tiger pistol pair was driving me crazy digging a new home every single night all over my tank until my YWG got out of QT and joined them. They immediately paired and have never left that burrow since. They slowly killed all my nassarius snails and have collected a pile of various snail and hermit shells in their burrow. But they seem to have settled in nicely and I enjoy them much more now.

that nassarius part is sad, i need them lol

I have 2pr of Wheelers Gobies 1pr with a red/white striped pistol & the other pr is actually living in some barnacles with my Midas blennie. I made a place for the 1st pr & shrimp by creating a bowl area & laid a piece of live rock over it so that there was a hole for them to go in. I then used a piece of 3" clear PVC to guide them into the whole & they've been there for over a yr now. The spot I made for the other pr was taken over by my Yellowhead Jawfish so they moved around until they found the Barnacle & moved into a lower unit below the midas blennie. I have no idea what happened to the other pistol shrimp.

The thing I hate about pistol shrimp and their partners is that once they find their spot, I never see them. Having a nano/pico setup, it looked barren. So I don’t like to put those types into my small tanks. Takes up the bio load with nothing to look at.
Their relationships are super cool just not for me.

I had 2 pistol shrimp come in as hitch hikers on live rock. They snapped all night, and drove me crazy! They were fairly large ( cleaner shrimp sized ), and caused a lot is sand stirring and destruction of frags on the tiles in the sand. I upgraded to a larger tank, and got rid of the pair. I sleep much better at night! I'm not a big fan....
