Hi all, I am wondering if PJ Cardinals are hermaphrodites that will allow me to have a pair if I just dump two of them in at the same time. I want two as to not take up too much space that I want for other fish, but will one likely harass the other to death? Or will it be better if I keep them in a trio?

I want to see the mouthbrooding.

I have a group of six in my display that I have had over 4 years in multiple tanks. Never seen them fight each other, very peaceful

Yeah they aren’t super aggressive for breeding they are usually kept in groups to assure you get males and females. Not sure if two males alone will fight or not though.

No, this species is not hermaphrodite.

No, they will fight in small tank. You need a male and a female. male often do poorly. If you feed the pair well, the female will be with eggs really often so the male will carry one patch after the other, cannot eat and die. You must make attempts to feed the male well, and try not to feed the female too much.
