Placement of protein skimmer

Just got a Red Sea Max 650 but I am not 100% sure where to place the skimmer. There are two areas in the sump that could hold it and the directions are not that great. I would appreciate any help. New to this, obviously!!

I have this but it was published so long ago I wasn’t sure if something changed and I am not sure if the skimmer sits on the bottom or on a shelf as the pic shows. There is a place for the shelf but it seems to be missing.

skimmers are designed to work at a certain depth of water. Most likely it needs to sit on the shelf. Look up the model of skimmer and read the manual on it. It should say how deep it should sit in the water.

If it is what I am thinking, I would say 1st is the skimmer, and the second chamber would be for a refugium. The reason for this is because the skimmer can get clogged up with macroalgae if it is second. However, it can work either way.

I also have a Max 650S, I can tell you the sump is crap.
Im trying to modify mine but its really a poor design on this V1. Honestly im just looking at buying a new one.

I have a Minireef 120. the sump that comes with has 3 sections
The first is quite deep and the other 2 the same.
The skimmer that came with was a hang on type so depth wasn't an issue?
I now have a Mantis 120 skimmer that has a depth between 160-180mm which is deeper that section 2-3 and far too shallow for section one.

SO I have created a baffle on section 2 to lift the depth to the required but it's still susceptible to evaporation at the return pump section 3.

I need to make a stand to place the skimmer in section 1 to keep depth at the ideal.

I guess I could use larger dia PVC tubing as a stand? hmmm
