Have a biocube and will be moving the rock and fish into a 40 breeder which will be LPS dominated (with some zoas).

would like to avoid dosing as long as possible. Would I be better off using Red Sea Coral Pro or Instant Ocean for this endeavor?

I know I could use a lower Alk salt. Just trying to keep it simple, avoid dosing as long as possible and do weekly (or bi weekly) 10% water changes (about 5 gallons).

Am a ways off from this setup but getting my ducks in a row.

Looks like Red Sea has a slightly higher Alk level than IO. I’ve always used Red Sea, either Coral Pro or their blue bucket, and have had no issues.

For simple dosing you could look at Tropic Marin’s All for Reef.

Red Sea would be the better choice between those 2, I used that salt for a while when I started my 1st reef tank. LPS do use a good amount of alk, and they will decline pass the point of no return if they are in low alk too long, so using a higher alk salt is not a bad idea. Regardless of how much you want to not dose, at some point your stocking will surpass what you can replenish through water changes. Once you get a bit of corals going, I do suggest weekly testing to establish a baseline of usage. Dosing is not the big deal that some try and make it.

i haven’t ever figured out dosing. I am in the same line of thinking and the longer I can put it off the better. I don’t ever think I will have wall to wallcorals. Maybe 5-7 corals.

It all starts with 5-7 corals, then bam! Your packed full. Dosing is easy, i much rather dose than water change. Bulk reef supply has a calculator for their products, very easy

5-7.

A frogspawn, Duncan, lobo, some zoas, favia, and who knows what else. Stuff that’s easy and forgiving

You have more self control than i do. I have a 20gal AIO and i have about 20 types of zoas/palys. I only have 5 or 6 different types of corals, but alas i have different color variations of the same, ya know

I just want something nice for our family room. I tried sps but my life doesn’t revolve around corals. I coach sports, have kids, like to travel...not conducive for an sps tank

I hear ya. No sps in my tank either, i don't have the cash to massage a fully automated tank. I still dose by hand since it's not consumed very quickly
