So, I was told this was a 15g sump. I did some measurements and I am coming to 12g. The reason I bought it was because it was so cheap. My plan is to put it on a 125g tank.

I will be using a HOB overflow, so I should be able to adjust it to not allow much water to drain in the event of a power outage.

My though was I would use the left side for a skimmer (it is 9x9 inches.) Then the center for a refugium. The right side would be the return pump with a heater. If I ever put any reactor on, it would probably be external.

So, I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions for equipment (skimmer, return pump, ect.) or if anyone recommends not using such a small sump with the tank I have. The person I bought it from said that with the HOB overflow, I should be able to set the height of the inlet to not allow much water to overflow if anything fails. Let me know what you guys think please.

Ryan,

My suggestion would be to turn the sump around. Now going from left to right I would add some type of filtration either a filter sock or a suspended filter pad. then the skimmer in the center and the fuge in the last section at the end of the fuge I would add a bulkhead and run a small external pump. I find sumps especially with a skimmer will do a better job if some type of filtration is used in the first chamber.

I like that idea. Thank you for the suggestion.

For filter socks or filter cups, I could glue in some square aqrilic with holes in it to hold them. Would the be better then putting filter floss in to float or what other options were you talking about.

Oh I thought ..... Dump bucket wave maker ...... How cool, and retro. Bah, it's a typo ......

I would go with something bigger. Not saying that tank won't be fine, but a larger tank will give you more future options.

Oh, I did not even realize it auto corrected me. I wonder if I can edit the title when I get on the computer.

If you don't like the filter sock idea and I am not a fan either then I suggest some 1" x 1" pieces glued around the first chamber then set a piece of egg crate on them and then on top of that some type of filter mat. The mat is very inexpensive change it every 30 days or so 10 second change out and very effective...

I am not seeing any way to edit the topic. Anyways, my plan was to start with a smaller sump just so I can get the HOB Filter and HOB Skimmer of my main tank. My budget is pretty thin right now, I may go with used equipment (I haven't decided yet.)

I hear filter socks are effective but, I also hear about having to change them every two days. So, I do not know if I would want to do that.
