I am planning a 40 gal breeder to 20 gal sump. Is a Herbie style overflow safe enough? I would prefer the Bean Animal but have not found any small overflows.
How do I design the plumbing? Are there templates or do you have recommendations? Thank you!

I have your setup. I went with a Modular Marine overflow (The 800 GPH). After three months, I wish I would have gone with a wider Weir (the part that skims the inside of the tank). My 2 cents, whatever design you go with, go with a Bean Animal-style overflow.....its dead quite and super safe.

I bought the Fiji cube 1200 GPH overflow it can be set up for bean animal. Just use a gate valve to adjust the the flow

Herbie is more than safe. I ran a Glass Holes drilled overflow with single 1.5" bulkhead/drain for 15 years and never had an issue other than noise. Herbie and Beananimal are identical regarding tuning and flow; the Beananimal simply has an emergency overflow that never sees water just in case the other two drains somehow plug. You definitely need a valve on the primary drain though to tune for noise.

I'm considering purchasing the 800gph model

Regarding wider Weir- when looking down on it while installed, do you mean:

1) longer- left to right (aprox 8 inches)?
2) longer front to back (aprox 1 inch)?

If 1- that makes total sense to me
If 2- Why?
thanks

Wider as in #1. With the teeth on the weir, and with how relatively short it is in relation to the width of a 40 breeder, I’m not sure it skims as well as other setups I’ve had.

Here is my 40B with herbie overflow setup.

1 thing that I would have done different. The gate valve placement. I would move it to the horizontal pipes

Ugh, why didn't I read this earlier! I just redid my plumbing and this would have be great to do.
