thinking about changing up my nano frag to a planted macroalgae tank to grow some edibles for my tang. wondering if anyone knows of some more exotic/colorful edible macros like the flame tipped halymenia?

I am in the process of doing the same... It start with me getting live red macro algae for my Achilles tang that is in QT at the moment.

He devoured it one day So I am thinking about growing it in large quantities for him. I am unsure of the exact species but its a nice deep red color I will try to look for you because I am curious as well..

thanks.
im always looking to vary diet and im tired of dried/frozen food- fresh must be most nutritional and natural. browse this site Marine Plants In The Aquarium: An online guide to the identification and care of marine plants and macroalgae in the aquarium. lots of good info, ids, growing conditions and if its desirable by fish.

It appears what I have is Gracilaria.. And that is what the guy at the LFS says. There seems to be multiple species within that. Regardless I think tangs would eat any of them. However, obviously some have faster growth rates so I guess that would be the tricky part.

That's a relief! I'm doing the exact same thing, but growing film algae and taking it out in sheets. I'm glad you didn't decide that a naso tang wouldn't be great for your 29 gallon lol!

tang heaven as they call it, looking to grab some of that as well.

I would use the sump to grow out macro. Then just scrape and let the return pump chop and serve

Many different options out there! Halymenia is an awesome option, it grows fast and tangs absolutely love it. I brought a very sick skeleton thin achilles tang back from the dead with it before. If the main purpose is for tang food, one good option to consider is red bubble algae (botryocladia). Its a great option because the tang will eat the bubbles off the algae, leaving the red stem (unless the tang is really hungry!). Once the bubbles have been eaten, return the stems to the nano and the bubbles will regrow in a week or two. Repeat the process as necessary :) With enough botryocladia you can trade out bunches for the tang to eat and always have a new one ready to go. Gracilaria (red is great) would be another very good option.

Many other edible display macros out there, but most grow far too slowly to be a practical source of food for a tang.

thanks for the response, i actually ended up ordering some of that botryocladia in addition to the flame tip halymenia and some standard ulva lettuce. Ill update a before and after in a few days when i get everything all setup.
