i read about this on reef builders yesterday. i'm really curious to see what the pricing is going to be like.

Todd from Cherry Corals had a set-up that he was testing for some company....Looks interesting. Will be interesting to see what the real world application will be and the effects on corals and color.

The price will be the tell tale sign of it's popularity...

A store in Syracuse NY is also testing them out. Great intensity, but terrible colour.

From the article, you dim the light to get the blue spectrum. If you run it at 100% it looks 10k.

I agree with Azurel, price will be the main issue. If these are like LED lighting and cost $2,000+ they can keep them. Especially if you look at the fact that most people don't run MH 10-12 hours a day anymore. I change my MH bulbs out every 18-24 months. If you look at the 5 year life on the these, I spend $600 on two Phoenix 14K 250w in that 5 years.

They actually operate the lamp dimmed during store hours since people have a tendency to look up at the light source. They also turned it up to 100% for me to see and dimmed or 100% the colour was terrible.

wow, that's disappointing..:squigglemouth:

Yes! Actually when they had it on dimmed, my friend and I thought they were cheap lamps and kept saying to each other "wow they've got some nice corals in here by why the cheap lighting!"

He sent it back for tweeking, the color was off and the model he had was not dimmable.
Seems like the trend for lighting is fully dimmable with more energy savings.

I think LED is the only thing to be considering right now.

good to see people are messing with these so early...but they are a long way off.

Not for me. I can't justify LED high price fixtures for main lighting. Although I was looking at some of the DIY threads. I have a feeling if these end up working then it will be the same high price tag as LED.

i agree, also with your earlier post about MH lighting being more cost effective then people realize. LEDs are still new, prices will continue to come down. As energy prices continue to rise and LED evolve and become more effcient they will be cost effective. Plasma will be right behind them probably.
