I can get ahold of some 55 gallon plastic barrels. They are the food grade blue ones. They held balsomic vinegar. Will these be safe annd how should I clean them?

Usually when I absolutely need a cleanser to clean something out fish related I use dawn dish soap, I figure if it's okay to clean up animals that have gone through an oil spill, its good for my application, otherwise I just try to use scolding hot water.

Vinegar or bleach will both work. Just don't use them together and be sure to rinse both out very well. For bleach let it dry well until the bleach smell is 100% gone.

Food grade is perfect for storing RO/DI water as it does not leeach any TDS. Like some others mentioned give it a good rinse and youll be good to go!

As far as "storing water" does the water absolutely have to be the same temp as the tank when you do a WC or is room temp fine?

I dont know all that much about using bleach for cleaning out a tank, but as a professional chef this concerns me. It should be safe but you have to use it in correct amounts because if its over used it WILL leave a toxic residue behind. For food service sanitation purposes its 1 cap full per 5 gallons of water. I wish i knew a PPM concentration. This is just my .02 and I hope it proves as useful.

Room temp is normally fine but the salt will dissolve faster with the water at tank temp.

What about barrels that have been used to store chile/pepper?

A friend of mine has some of those and he rinsed the out the same way with bleach, but you can still smell the pepper sauce at times. You might also try a 20% muratic acid bath and then rinse well as I clean all aquarium stuff with a 20% solution and it works better and faster than vinegar.

I am a chef as well. The food safe ppm for a bleach sanatizing solution is 50ppm

Not sure I know it only really does anything on rock. I dipped a rock covered in green star polyps and it didn't even touch the coral. Lol tough stuff gsp

I got some that had held balsamic vinegar too. How long should I let them soak with bleach water? And how many days should I let them dry out in the sun?
