Plastic Finish

multiple coats of clear satin/gloss finish, best method application is sprayed on for even coats. do no over spray it will run. if your really ambitious wet sand and polish, ha that's quite overboard

Use a high quality plywood with some sort of veneer on it. Brush on a high quality oil based paint. Then you can spray it down and sand with a wet/dry 600 grit sandpaper. It's time consuming but the finish turns out really nice.

Thanks for the tips.

I was slightly disappointed as I used a high grade plywood and a while gloss paint, but it didn't turn out as I expected. I didn't know sanding would make it look smoother..

I have applied two coats of paint so far, do I apply another coat after sanding?

Yes. Apply additional coats and sand after each one. One the last coat polish with a brown paper bag then apply your clear coat. Use oil based paint which will self level and deliver a smoother fishing. Buy the white oil based rustoelum in a can at Home Depot.
