My place coral usually has long extensions but checked today and it seems to be swelling up. Any ideas?

This might be an attempt to move. When they swell up like that it's much easier for the currents to kind of set them a drift so to say. It's not going to end up on the other side of the tank, but moving two or three inches is not unheard of. GL.

Lol mine did move across the tank. The coral moved so much, my wife decided to name it lol

I'll would say it looks fine. Anytime you see any part of the skeleton, that's the time to worry.

Sorry for your loss :( if you have space, leave it in your system. Sometimes a few months later a baby will grow. Mine didn't, but many have told me to set it in the back a forget about it. You might get lucky.

I know :( I super bummed. I seriously liked having it in my collection. I just cant pin point what went wrong. I barely have any fluctuations in my tank. I spot fed.

Plates can be really weird sometimes. It could have been as simple as a hermit crab falling onto it. You'll probably never know. I lost one that way, I think. My crabs are always falling off the rock.

sorry for your loss, like everyone else stated they puff up to move because they're unhappy, maybe he just really was depressed...how old is he?

I would start checking water parameters and also the test kits against new water saltmix just in case something is wrong. last month I was on the verge of a tank crash as my Alk checker was out of calibration for awhile. Sorry for your loss.

Had it for about 5 months. It pretty much stayed the same size. For the whole 5 months it always had long extensions, very vibrant colors and looked even better than it did at the LFS. Up until the other day when i posted a pic of it swelling is when it started going down hill. This system is only a year old and its probably not as mature as I would like to think especially being ULNS but you're right it could of been anything that stressed it out.

Thanks. Yes that sounds like a good plan.
