Please can somebody help me identify this?

RODI only, I don't know anyone with a successful tank that uses city tap water.
You may be in an area with bad water. I know quite a few around here that do. I wouldn't risk it without looking at a water quality report but there isn't a reason I couldn't use tap water. My typical incoming TDS is under 70ppm. One reason I still use RODI is because the filters last for a very long time. I get well over 1500g before I hit 1ppm TDS on the output.

Looks like regular glass haze algae. I wouldn’t sweat it too much. Please don’t go to war and start dosing stuff over this.

I only use city tap water treated with Prime. I agree that this is not the preferred method of running a reef tank and I would not personally advise a newbie doing it, but it is done, successfully, by many of us. I realize you don't "know me", so your statement still stands true. Just putting another perspective out there.:)

Hey, I’ve only just brought the RODI system, i’m sure I set it up correctly i’ve used it for about 10-15 gallons with throwing away the first 3/4. How would I get a water report?

Just google "water report" for your county, town or city.. you should be able to find a report that looks something like this. With this information you can determine if your RO system is sufficient. Forgot to mention in my first post I agree on the algae being diatoms, no big deal Just keep up your maintenance and water changes

Your welcome :). Those are Spirorbid Worms.. harmless filter feeders, their populations can explode on new tanks but should subside over time.

Ever since I’ve had this tank set up, i’ve been struggling with this brown stuff. I’ve recently started using an RODI system as I thought it may be the water. It’s currently reading 1ppm. However, this has made no improvement.
Last time I checked my parameters were good but I just can’t shift this algae. I went to Canada for a few weeks and left my parents in charge and I came back to a clear tank but as soon as I changed the water it came back? The tank has been set up since the back end of October so almost 7 months

Hello from across the pond, Welcome aboard r2r the people here are great source of help and information,, do you have a UV light?? If not get one it’s the best piece of equipment I’ve ever got for my tank. Makes it look HD,, I wouldn’t run a system without one

Do silicates still get through the RODI system? If so how do I prevent this?

If you suspect it is silica, they can sneak past the Deionizing resins, they make special “silica busting” cartridges that catch them though. There are also test kits you can get to test for silica in your product water from your RODI too ;)

I don’t know the science of it but basically kills tiny organisms in water it helped me greatly during a horrible algae bloom I couldn’t figure out Finally tried a UV light and cleared up in day n half. Best thing I ever bought

Can you provide a few more specifics about your.system?

Tank Size
Filtration/skimmer/sump model
Light model and hrs/Dy that you run them?
Fish list (are they happy? How often do you feed and what?)
Coral list (are they happy? How long have you had them)
Size and frequency of

It looks to me like your system doesn't really need any adjustment except for a few more snails.

Are you seeing large mats or clumps of this algae on your rocks or in the corners of the tank? If so can you post a pic?

If not I would buy a few turbo snails and call it a day.

Don't waste your money on one till you get a algae bloom you can't handle. Your algae is common. I clean my glass every day or my CUC does.
