Please Help a fellow American Down On His Luck.... ;-)

I entirely disagree. Have you ever seen or had amphipods on a coral? If so, you would know that they do eat corals. I have seen this first hand, on a healthy, new coral. I watched them take bites. This lasted for several days until I fw dipped the coral and stuck it in a bowl that amphipods couldn’t get into, where the coral opened again.
I have been doing this for over 30 years, so I've seen amphipods on more coral than I can count, and I can assure you that if you had amphipods eating your coral either they are a species that I, and many others, have never seen, or your coral had decaying tissue, and they were eating that. I assure you that amphipods are good, and are ONLY scavengers. They are great CUC and fish food and will not eat live healthy coral.

Perhaps I had an uncommon type or something, but I am positive that the amphipods were eating the coral. I could see them taking bites, and there was visible damage as well. My amphipods also severely depleted my copepod population until my goby got them under control, so I may just have bad luck with this type of amphipod.

When it comes down to it, there are hundreds of different species of amphipods, and unless you're using a microscope and a happen to be a specialist, a species ID of an amphipod is pretty much impossible. It's perceivable that some may be corallivores. It's been a debated topic for a long time. Many do think a certain species will eat zoanthids, fwiw.

For the most part, amphipods in your tank are generally not a problem.
