Okay so recently our electric bill has spiked over the last few months and we donnot know why...we are thinking the fish tank. Would it hurt to have the canister filter on the same time as the lighting which is on from 10am-10pm. Thanks for any help or suggestions

IMO yes it would hurt. Not only does it filter your water it adds much needed flow.
Sorry to inform you but aquariums are expensive to run period.
You could lessen your lighting period from 12hrs a day to 6-8hrs a day.

Do you have a kill a watt device? They are relatively inexpensive and can give you a better idea if that is in fact the true culprit.

What lights do you have? I agree with seastar, and furthermore your canister filter pump shouldn't make a noticeable difference to your power bill.

mine always spikes this time off year. heater has to work twice as hard. i keep my lights on longer cause it always seems to be dark...lol.
