It’s all about adapting. Based on your starting pics I give you a 99% chance a clean and put back, for the wrasse, will work. No sand delay. That’s a light presence above, doesn’t signify water param issues in my guess, it signifies no grazer match... we r about to become the best grazer ever

its hard to envision how long it takes to truly rinse dirty sand. Everyone that does it says it took four times the planned time

see one more very relevant work example here just to round out presentations and outcomes, both very recent jobs. His persistent diatoms- we w see how persistent

I will take out my sand then and rinse it for as long as it takes tomorow and then put it back, maybe we can see what that does before removing the rock ?

It will be hard to get it out w rock in tank I’m thinking? we need the water taken out, before the sand, so no waste clouding can result

i could see ways to get around rocks if they stay: drain down to last 50% and shop vac all the rest until empty. Rocks stay.

youll need to rinse the inside leftover mess from that removal, in tank working around corals, we only do cloudless detail jobs no partial cloud jobs. The reason for removing rock is to get to sand underneath

if you can alt that creatively, do

I am now getting cyano Again. My sand is like cement in spots. Does that mean it is nutrient loaded causing issues.

Phosphates are .1 Nitrates 5. Chaeto wont grow no matter what i try. I am getting frustrated.

I am reading that I should dose nitrates. Will that eliminate what is forming in my tank. Or should I do chemiclean?

those are all steps to consider for the clean, uninvaded condition (after the work is done when the tank shines) the hardening part of the bed is organic stores, waste, that have locked into place by complexing with calcium carbonate or other strange means.

Hi guys, just a quick update. I’m still testing at 0 nitrates and 0 phosphates. I am getting a thick purple matting across the sand bed and now the rockwock.
I have tried to get the reading above 0 but I’m having no luck.

I really don’t want to start removing rocks and sand, I’m sorry but I currently don’t have the physical space or containers now I can’t leVe the house to get supplies.
Are there any other options I can try ?

A $130 UV system off Amazon is next easiest option

it won’t peel target off rocks but it will slow and likely stop regrowth from cells left after your topical manual cleaning. Still change lots of water due to siphoning clean the mass, but installing uv in the clean condition can save you from takedown cleaning. It has a very high chance of stopping regrowth, with only initial topical removal required

Installed without initial clean: stops mass growth the rest likely stays until you can remove it via water change siphon.

Thanks for that, I have had a uv running on my tank since before this started. It’s an Eheim sized to my tank running at the recommended flow for bacteria

Have you tried ChemiClean yet?
Are you vacuuming out the cyanobacteria mats?
Why are you dosing Vibrant? In some cases, cyanobacteria growth seems to be linked to Vibrant dosing.

I have not no, I am considering makeing solution do some some nitrates and phosphates to the tank to get them to detectable levels. I have stopped vibrant a few weeks ago. It was reocmed by the guys at BRS so i gave it a go.

Another vote for chemiclean. Vacuum out as much cyano as possible, remove 1 gallon of your saltwater in a pitcher or container, mix in chemiclean, and then pour into sump slowly. Do a major water change a couple days later.
