Hello.
Please help. I've posted somewhere else when I did not think this was really a problem but I am starting to think I might have something major going on.

you should take apart your nano and clean it, invader free, and repeat as needed it wont be bad if you act soon. some hesitation has already occurred, but in a small tank no need to tinker w water just dispatch it.

99% take that statement to mean: lets wait months and add and subtract things to the water and Ill keep the invasion a while longer even if it triples.

That's not a bad idea but I would like to know what I'm dealing with in this tank and how to prevent it in the future.

I have a bta on the main rock structure. I also have mounted corals on that structure. How should I go about cleaning?

It explains all my equipment and how the tank is set up and run.
It also shows when the issue first showed up and what I have done so far.

Maybe I missed something in the beginning or made a wrong choice with something along the way.
Whatever it is, I would like to correct it, combat it, defeat it and not have it happen again if possible.
 
IMO, young tanks(old too) go through phases. Its likely you didnt do anything "wrong", its just something that happened. your numbers dont show any nutrient limitation, a main cause of dino explosions. what i see on the sand just looks like cyano, the slimey stuff up top is hard to ID 100% as youd really need a microscope. but the general "cure" is to look at big things, good source water, claen or scrub it with a toothbrush, use a pro biotic like add some dr tims after a water change, dont get crazy but look at the PH and co2. change foods for a month, look at flow etc.

Ive had some odd ball stuff pop up over time and thats all Ive really done. except for bryopsis really, it works.
 
our sand rinse thread is page after page of takedown cleanings with anything in tow, no arrangement in a nano is hard to work with. so many creative options, such as while you are rinsing off the rocks externally in the sink with saltwater, the anem is getting mist sprayed to keep it wet by someone else, giving you out of water work time

the sandbed, right now if you reach and grab sand and drop any, I bet a giant cloud erupts. if not, then no need to rinse sand at all, if it does, you should, that's invader feed and invader itself depending on what more detailed pics would show (white light, clearer standing back ones too)

*not everyone agrees with sandbed rinsing, that's what the tank cleaners do. dosers and param tuners leave all the sandbed accumulation in place and work through the water only. you'll have to choose your method as you see fit.

here's our thread for you to see cleaning galore by all size tanks, they're moving and upgrading etc so they had to make the changes, its no different if you are choosing to employ them to rid an invader.

most will not use the hand cleaning as stated above, that's last resort after they start to lose things or even for the next tank. People tend to hold onto their invasions, tightly.

we never ID any invader in this thread, nor take param measures for the tanks because they are forms of hesitation. we go off the assumption that an invader is caused by you purposefully farming it, when a kill option existed. ID is for people who must work through the water only, so that you can match a chemical or a param to a known invader.

no harm in experimenting with additions or subtractions of things, our method can be ran at anytime even as catchup. in that thread, we think an invader that shows up isn't a surprise, we're importing too many microbes to enumerate

what is a surprise is an organism that keeps a footing on vital space after three rip cleans, which we never see, cuz it takes act of reef congress to sell even only one rip clean :)

the absolutely fed up don't have to be sold, they post up saying lets rip this thing apart Im angry. and we do. its fine if you want to experiment with additions, heck with today's retail options for sludge digesting and competing strains of bacteria Im not surprised if one of them wins out, but that's lucking.

we'd have it rip cleaned and under compliance by end of week no questions asked, all work done by you. sometimes a repeat is needed depending on variables like depth of cleaning and mass accumulation/deposits in the rocks etc. to be able to part clean any tank without killing it is the benefit.

This won't be much help in determining what it is, but I recently went through this with a tank I set up for my daughter. It was a 20g long with dry rock and live sand.

A few months in it started to develop that same "stringly" looking stuff you pictured above. Like you, there didn't appear to be anything out of whack including parameters. She was getting her water from me so I knew it wasn't a water quality issue.

I could never figure out what it was or what caused it. The only thing that solved it was manual removal and time. Like @saltyfilmfolks said above, I chalked it up to one of the ugly stages of a new tank.

Right now, if not for bad luck I would have none.
My beautiful bta decided to try to walk around. He wound up on the nanostream powerhead.

I just came home from work, looked at the tank and said what the heck?!?
I could not see through the water. I turned the light on and saw how cloudy it was.
I saw parts of the bta stuck in the vents of the powerhead.
I saw my skimmer overflowing.

Im doing a massive water change right now and trying to pry the rest of the bta off the powerhead.

This is not what I expected to come home to.

I've kept bta's for years and never had one get caught in a powerhead (till now)

Im at this moment trying to save the rest of the tank.
 
Im trying to look on the bright side.
I get to scrub the rocks and hit them with some peroxide in an attempt to rid the tank of that stringy, slimy algae. (If its algae at all)

I also get to raise the alk and calcium because I did a 95% water change. Both were a bit low when I tested yesterday.

I can plan to put coral in the spot the bta was in.
My clowns did not care about the bta at all! Showed absolutely no interest in it.

I can get an anemone my snowflake clowns might actually host.


The possibilities are endless. (Sarcasm)

You are at the classic crossroads, two opposing options exist:

1. manually clean and guide them out now, last week, at first sign with no more hesitation since nanos are simple to part clean, before the biomass sets in further. Plan for a repeat cleaning, due to waiting for action. Guide it out, you are the grazer nature would otherwise have used. Several threads exist showing how to take apart and clean without recycling. Farm nothing that you didn’t buy on purpose, every invasion is take apart cleaned out of existence until you are through stocking new items, the cause of this invasion was simple LFS cross contamination + hesitation that allowed mass gain. When your tank is stocked and was hand guided into compliance you don’t have any more invasions under option one reefing approach. Remove your sandbed per threads, best dinos without it, put back a bed that is free of dinos

What will be recommend to you is option two, the opposite-


2. everything else besides taking command of your investment. Tinker with testing, study a 250 page thread, water params your corals are perfectly fine with must now be adjusted because only option two is recommended as soon as those pics you posted are seen. Prepare to be dosing plant tank fertilizer to your reef and waiting to see if mass drops.


The giant dinos thread is found in the nuisance algae forum linked up top. That thread requires that you stop using GFO or any nitrate specific media, the thread says that’s the cause of your dinos and that they’re in all systems and that using that media starts the imbalance which results in no dino competitors

Nobody says the options must be mutually exclusive, they are for large tankers. A nano keeper could option one, then option two in the clean condition to prevent growback. Paired approach is possible too

Exactly how do I clean the rock and sand and corals?

Do I run them under tap water?
Bleach?
Swish them around in saltwater?

How do I do this?

There’s careful order required in taking apart Nanos so you don’t kill them, when it’s done right it’s 100% not going to cause a recycle. I linked that for study so you can check each page for details such as rocks are always cleaned in saltwater not freshwater, and sand can be rinsed in tap water, all that detail is there in about one hours read all set. I would know those peoples actions back and forth before proceeding, tank cleaning can kill your reef if you skip order but each case in there has special ordered actions that are always the same for tanks large and small. By page ninety, if the order is followed no losses will be reported. When we fail, the invader keeps growing back no matter how hard we worked, but we don't fail in terms of tank loss.

Most invaders respond to forceful cleaning in one or two passes and some don't, but all tanks can endure limitless cleaning and never recycle as cleaning never harms bacteria. Our thread shows you a safe way to test manual cleaning as an option, and manual cleaning is free and no wait.
