Hello everyone,

New to the reading hobby and with alot of inexperience I set my reef tank up without using a QT, anyhow I've ran into some major trouble, we had 2 Vanderbilt chromis, a clown, watchman goby, engineer goby, and were down to one chromis and a clown. One chromis bullied the other to the point of death:( the other chromis had some white spots so we figured he may of had ich but it cleared up in a day, now he has this open sore on his side and I thin it maybe a diesease, I really hope we dont have to tear the tank down and destroy the biological filter:( can somebody please help me troubleshoot this.

Tank is 45 gallon about a month and a half old
-ammonia 0
-nitrates 0
-nitrites 0
-ph. 8.0

Well heck, that looks like either uronema or a bad bacterial infection. But due to the deaths of the other fish, I'm leaning uronema.

The really bad news is that once it's in the tank, it can last indefinitely. You can't starve it out like ich, velvet, etc. The tank will need to be sterilized.
This used to be a disease we only saw in Chromis, but it seems to be jumping species. :(

Was hoping that wasn't the case but what can you do...

So doe that mean all my live rock has to go to? I have no idea how to approach this...

Also my clownfish seems to be doing great... is it going to infect him? Or what

Uronema is an odd disease. As @Humblefish stated in the posted link, Uronema used to be pretty much affecting just Chromis. The other species didn't seem to be affected by it. But recently we've seen more and more "jumping" to other species. So it's possible that the clowns are either immune, as in the past, or they are possible carriers of Uronema. So you have some choices to make: Treat the fish prophylactically to make sure they are not carrying, but the tank now has Uronema in it. It won't go away. Sorry. I've been through similar problem. Had a whole tank of fish lost to velvet. I was so bummed I almost gave up. But thanks to @Humblefish, @4FordFamily and lots of other helpful folks, I started over. Now I QT everything wet: fish, corals, inverts, everything. This hobby has a rather sharp learning curve. Won't even consider trying any Chromis these days.

My invertebrates are now acting really strange, climbing the glass, also lost a hermit, **** I have no idea what is wrong or what to do, would uronema affect my invertebrates?

It wouldn't impact inverts. However, if you have a parameter off it could.

You haven't dosed any medication right?

Yes I should of mentioned i dosed with melafix and an antifungal agent, this stuff is supposedly reef and invertebrate safe but I'm starting to wonder if that's maybe why my guys are acting strange, my LFS suggested using this as he said it looked like a bacterial infection but it looks like its uronema from the research I've been doing.
I don't think I'm going to dose anymore seeing if it is uronema bacterial and fungal meds are not going to do a thing and I'd rather keep that stuff away from the invertabrates if I can.
I'm just at a complete stop right now and don't even know where to start other then tearing down the full tank which looks like I'm gonna have to do if I have the parasite:( I guess this means destroying all the live rock?
And what about my clown, he seems happy enough , can he return to the DT later when i figure this out? What should I do with him? I need all the help I can possibly get guys, I have no experience with this but I want to get my reef tank going and i want to do it right.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
