We had a friend give us some coral because they were moving. They could not remember what it was and we cannot identify it either. Could somebody please help us figure out what it is? We want to make sure we have the right setup and placement.

Goniopora for sure. Otherwise known as flower pot coral. You gonna need to feed I️t regularly to keep I️t alive. Some species of it prefer to be on sandbed others on the rocks.

+1, yep a nice little flowerpot; moderate light, medium flow and I put mine mid way up the tank glued to a rock. Pretty fast growers and they can be aggressive so give them room.

Reports are that green gonioporas are the least hardy, although that may be anecdotal. Some colors, such as red gonis, seem to be very hardy and can definitely be kept successfully for years; in my own case, I have a beautiful red one that has survived numerous in-tank extinction events (due to my own ineptitude or just bad luck) that have sent lesser corals to the eternal ocean.
