Herbivores.

A few detritavores can be helpful, but they won't do squat for algae. :)

So stick with lots of Cerith, Astrea, Trochus, Turbo, Crown, Nerite snails. Mostly stay away from the rest...no need for more than a few.

Headed to my LFS today for my CUC. Would a lawnmower blenny be a good idea?

As always. Thanks for the help.

If you really want a Lawnmower Blenny, yes. Otherwise, no. :) They seem to be pretty hit or miss on algae, BTW.

Unless the blenny is a priority on his own merits, I'd make sure you beef up the invertebrate segment of your CUC population before attempting to employ fish. Fish are fine, I'd just go in increments and consider them after. IMO. :)

This past weekend I got some red hermits, astrea snails, and trochus snails. I did a wc, siphoned the Cyano from the sand and spent a good amount of time brushing the Cyano off the rocks and glass. I drip acclimated them for over an hour. That night I noticed two of the hermits died. The next day I noticed some marks on one of my Wyoming White clownfish, I posted a thread on R2R on the fish and disease part. This morning I found the marks darker and now I find the same marks on my other clown. I just got back home and noticed him on the sand and barely breathing. He’s not passed away. Could the Cyano be the cause? In the past 3 days I’ve lost a clown and possibly soon the other one, 3 hermits, and 2 astrea snails.

Thanks.

D0 you see signs of dino's blooming? Are you running activated carbon in your system at present?

Some types of cyano *can be* toxic, but I'm not aware of folks ever reporting that for the strains we get in our tanks.

Regardless of all that, toxic algae would not do much to explain the clownfish - they'd be among the last to feel the effects since they don't eat dino's. IMO the tank would need to have a pretty wicked dino bloom happening to tweak a clownfish.

How old were the clowns? If they were as new as the CUC you added, then don't rush too quickly to blame your tank, they may have had something.

If the tank itself is new, then perhaps the clowns were simply stressed and this is coincidental with new tank stress?

The tank is about 8-9 months old now. I’ve had the clowns for a little over 5 months. I don’t notice any dino’s right now, but I’m also not 100% sure what’s the stuff growing on my rocks. Brown hair algae, Cyano, maybe some kind of Dino’s? I’m currently not running any carbon or media. I have an AIO, would I need a reactor to run activated carbon? I’m not 100% sure how that works.
