I purchased this Blue Tang on 6/13/17 and put him in a quarantine tank. Within a couple of days, he had three white spots, one in the black area of his dorsal fin, one on his left side in the oval shaped blue spot, and one in front of his left eye.
I alternate feeding Rod's Food Original Formula and LRS Reef Frenzy daily. He has eaten well since day one. I also feed Julian Spring's (Two Little Fishies) dried Seaweed, alternating between green and purple. It did take him a few days to start eating the seaweed, but eats it now. I soak the seaweed in garlic about twice per week.
I thought the white spots were too big to be ich, and that there weren't enough of them, but everything I could find says white spots = ich, so I treated him for ich using hyposalinity. I kept him at 1.009 SG until 7/9/17 (3 weeks), monitoring pH and ammonia/nitrite/nitrate closely. I did 50% water changes almost every day as the tank seemed to go through a small cycle during the hyposalinity treatment. During the three weeks I did not see much change in the white spots on the fish.
I started slowly raising the salinity (over two weeks), by continuing to do daily 50% water changes. During this time I started other treatments.
First I treated with Prazipro, doing the original dose on 7/9/17 and re-dosing three days later on 7/12/17. Again I did not notice any change in the white spots.
On 7/15/17 I started treating for a possible fungal/bacterial infection using Pimafix and Melafix. This cleared up the spots on his side and on his dorsal fin, but did not affect the spot by his eye. I finished the treatment on 7/23/17
Over the last 6 weeks the spot by his eye has gotten slightly larger, but does not seem to be spreading. I am beginning to think it may be HITH or HLLE, but I don't have any experience with either of these diseases, so I am unsure how to diagnose them or how to move forward.
Thank you in advance for any help.
