So I just noticed this and can't figure out what it is nor how it got there. Its growing on a man made "arch" that's been in my tank for 18 months and is filled with several types of zoos, mushrooms and palys. I haven't put any new LPS or SPS in for months and this sprouted up in the middle of some zoos. Can anyone please identify what it may be. My LFS thought it might be some clove polyps but I don't think so.

Pocillapora is not as bad as aptasia. It does have ability to detach its polyps. They float and land somewhere. They are a sps coral and will grow into a small short branching hard coral. A colony will look like its close cousin the birds nest coral. It differs in appearance by stubbier branches and unlike birds nest it can encrust at its base making it more sturdy. They get the same glowing polyps.

Thank you for the info, so do you think it would be a long term mistake to keep it? I still have no idea how it hitch hiked in?

That is your call. I have several pocillapora. They are very pretty coming in gold, green and purple. The polyps are long and glow at tips. The skeleton flesh base color is generally a different color than polyps. Giving it a pretty contrast when water swaying the polyps. They are also sold as frags online and in local stores. You can find pictures and lots of info online about them. They are less a nuisance than some palys, green star polyps or xenia.

They only way it will become a bother to you is if a sps colony grows where you do not want it. They also do not always throw out babies. They are a pretty sps coral and is not anywhere near the threat to other corals as an aptasia, which has no visible attributes and multiplies faster than a roach.

I visit several LFS some have had them spawn others have not. Not sure if it is related to survival on if they spawn or not. To me mine have never spawned. My rainbow bubble tip anemone has divided 7 times in 4 years. You probably got it as a hitch hiker when from a coral you bought.
