I am contemplating going from a 75G reef tank to a 200G tank. I have looked at Red Sea and Waterbox but the biggest I could find was about 180G for the DT (not incl. sump). I would like to buy something similar to RS and Waterbox peninsula systems. I thought about building my own, but that is to risky/time consuming and a custom tank is just to costly.

I have also looked at the 200G+ tanks with the built in canopies, but those won't work w my house décor. I like the sleek look of the RS and Waterbox tanks so if anybody can tell me where I can find a 200G sleek tank like these, I would appreciate it.

With that said, if I had to go w a 180G tank, what are the limitations when it comes to fish? I think a 180 will handle most large angels and that is about the largest fish I would want. What am I really getting for an additional 20G?

Look at foot print more than gallons.

If a fish says 125g thats a 5’ tank.

A 120g is only 5 gallons less but one whole foot shorter in length. So not as suitable for a very active swimmer.

When you get in the 200 gallon range you are bumping into the custom tank range.
Many makers in that range.

Need to think about the whole package when getting into this size aquarium. Do you want a remote sump? As the equipment for larger tanks take up a lot of room under a tank. Lighting get a size that is easy to buy lighting for. Example ATI make fixtures up to 60 inches.

I'm in the exact same boat as you so I am following this thread to see what advice you get. I want at least a 220 gallon and most likely will be going custom. The cost will be a lot more expensive, but I don't see any other way since all the package deal tanks I have found don't go over 180 like you stated.

ATM, (Acrylic Tank Manufacturers) are offering a platinum line of glass aquariums that come with the tank, stand, canopy and lights and are starphire glass, (1/2'' I believe) and they have a 230 and 260 gallon that I really like, at a great price, but there is no reviews or much info since they are so new. Maybe someone on here has one or has more info. I know the light is for fish only so I would expect to still have to get lighting for a reef tank, but it would be good for a FOWLR tank.

Thanks. Looked at the ATM site and it looks pricey. Any idea what a 200G would cost for the things you mentioned above?

Here is the link to the prices of the ATM Tanks: https://www.acrylicaquariums.com/store/platinum-line-aquariums

They don't have a 200, but have a 230 and 255 and the 255 is the one I was thinking of getting. It is $2,475 and the shipping to me in Tucson would be $400, but I was planning on picking it up and they said they would even help me load it on the truck. The only other place I know of that sells them so far is Fish Tanks Direct.com and they have the 255 for $2,899 with free shipping so it would be cheaper buying through them if you are getting it shipped.

Like I said, the lights are for fish only, so the lights I was looking at would be an additional $1.200 and the sump would be anywhere from $300 - $500 for the ones I am looking at. That still leaves the skimmer, pumps, heaters, ATO, controller and whatever else I decide as far as dosing and reactors and such. I was planning on around $7,00 to $8,000 total for everything, give or take.

As far as the custom tanks go, the tank alone for most of the places I looked start at around $3,000 and go up to around $8,000. That is for a 220 gallon tank with starphire glass drilled ranging from 76"" to 92"" long. The places that also make stands are asking way too much for the stands so I would probably have a friend build me one at cost, (I would pay him extra for his time and effort though).

Hope that helps.

Sorry, but my math was off. It would still be cheaper buying direct from ATM and paying the shipping for me, but depending on how far you are from Las Vegas it may be a lot more to ship to you.
