Ok, I have 120 gallon reef. I cant decide which tangs I want to get. My wife told me I MUST get a blue hippo tang. I would like to get a total of 2-3 tangs (would prefer 3 so there is an odd number). The tangs I would LOVE are the Tenneti tang, atlantic blue tang, Chevron tang, or Tomini tang. Which would be with a hippo tang and do you know of any cool tangs that would work well in my tank?

Thank you,

Joshua

U can't go wrong with Yellow Tang, Tomini Tang, and the Chevron Tang if u can get a healthy one, now if ur going to keep a hippo tang they are NOT reef safe, also the Atlantic Tang IMO would need a bigger tank. Good luck.

Hippos can be pesky around zoos IME. I second the recommendation for a Tomini. They are spectacular.

Ummm I've never heard of Hippo Tangs being Not-Reef-Safe... Where did you hear this???

From my personal experience, I had a Purple Tang and a Hippo Tang go crazy on me, they ate most of my Zoas, also go to YouTube there's a video of a hippo eating Zoas, Rabbitfish the same thing, good luck.

The the first Ive ever heard of it also. Ive had my hippo for over 2yrs now and he has never been any problem. Even my Coral Beauty has behaved over the last 5yrs. Maybe keeping them well fed is a plus?

I personally like desjardini. But in a 120 you are going to have a lot of aggression from about any combo of tang. You may want to reconsider and buy one really nice tang.

a 120 is large but 3 full size tangs in the same tank would be hard to accomplish. It would be easiest if you were to add all 3 tangs at the same time to avoid large bouts of aggression. Also, putting different genus together is better than putting 2 like genus together. A Ctenochaetus, Zebrasoma, and your blue would probably work out the best

Your tank is NOT that big. So, if you get the tangs...please get the smallest possible.
Tangs need more spaces to swim....and they grow fast.

I agree. I had a hippo and had to give it away. granted mine was in a 75, but it still grew very fast and ate like a cow. I have a purple tang now as my only tang. He can be aggressive but had never had a problem with him eating my zoa's. He will pick at the algae growing in between or the food that may fall on them but that is it.
