please help me pick a pump size

Hello,
I have been planning my tanks one 75 and one 55 with a 40 gallon sump.. I am just trying to guess the proper size.. I heard that you should be able to pump 3 times the amount of water in the tank is that correct.?

The nice thing about todays DC pumps is the ability to control speed.
Oversize and adjust speed. This will allow for future upgrading also.

ok thank you that was what I was thinking trying to learn about head lift I guess that means from sump to tanks? correct meaning the amount of lift it has to push.

yes that is part of the equation. Head loss also fits in there.
