Please help me understand what may be going on with ORP while bacteria dosing.

About 4 month ago, I was too impatient and overdosed with NOPOX (3x normal amount) while also using Dr. Tim's product.
This created too much bacterial bloom which I believed resulted in competition with my coral zooxanthellae bacteria.
I think the corals may have trouble competing for Nitrogen and Phosphates and thus my coral polyps retracted and looked sickly.


Now I am much more careful with carbon dosing (1/3 of normal amount) since my Nitrate is 1 ppm and Phosphate is now at 0.1 ppm.


I understand Waste Away increases ORP when used. Lately for each weekly dosing (for the last 6 weeks--maybe this was always happening and I never paid attention to it) I have observed in my tank, upon initial dose of 60ml for my 60 gallon tank, my pH would drop from 3.2 to 3.06. This drop typically occurs in about 30 minutes (probably due to turning off protein skimmer.)
After a couple hours of shutting my protein skimmer off, I would turn it back on due to my pH levels going below 7.9. It would take about 24 hours before pH would bounce back to 3.2. I assume the low pH is bacterial growth and respiration of CO2 from all tank organisms and inhabitants.

The question I would like to understand is why would my ORP also drop? Say for instance my ORP is 320, after about 3 hours, my ORP goes down to 300. Again about after 30 hours, my ORP would slowly rise back up to 320 and beyond.

What is happening to my ORP?

Not many hobbyist are concerned with ORP, especially with the probes being problematic over time.

If I'm correct, the spike in bacteria had a drop in 02 in the water column, thus a drop in ORP.

Placing a air stone with a pump in your sump for a little while may help it.

I have a CO2 scrubber attached to my protein skimmer. Right now my pH is moving back up, but my ORP is still down.

ORP is very complicated,a nd can respond to low levels of redox active metals and organics.

It's impossible to say why your ORP dropped without knowing exactly everything that is in the material you dosed. it might be as simple as it contains reduced metals like ferrous ions (Fe++). Might be a preservative added to preserve the bacteria. Might be the bacteria consumed O2 and shifted the balance to less oxidation in the tank.
