Hi all,

I've had this coral for about 3 years now and struggled off and on with it. I think it is some kind of scrolling montipora, but I don't know for sure. It seems to like less light than my Acros do. Well, recently, I turned up my LED lights a little too much I guess. Its color has gone pale and it is developing white splotches. Aglae has taken the opportunity to grow on the most damaged areas. I've had my lights turned way down for about a week and it seemed to be looking better until tonight.

I'm wondering if there could be other contributing factors. I recently started using GFO and activated carbon to try to reduce my phosphates and nitrates. Could it be a result of too much carbon or GFO usage? Are they pulling out to many organics or trace elements? My salinity, pH, Ca, Mg, and KH are all perfect.

Could it be that the large batches of saltwater I keep circulating in PET drums for water changes are losing too many trace elements to precipitation and not replenishing the tank? There is some blackish brown powdery substance at the bottom of the drums on a regular basis, but I add low dosages of trace elements to the tank.

One last thought. Could toxins from my green metallic torch be affecting the entire coral? My torch has gotten so big that its tentacles graze the coral as it blows in the current. I wasn't going to do anything about it because I figured it would just hurt the part the tentacles were touching.

I just don't know what else I can do. Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

gfo should be added slowly and VERY well rinsed. I followed the dosage recommendations and a lot of my corals wilted. some didnt

It's definitely the most sensitive coral I have. Does that sound like the most likely issue? I rinsed it well, but did add quite a bit all at once. I had no idea you were supposed to add a little at a time. Do you know why that is?

Basic stability is key rule in reef keeping.

Thanks! Great article. Makes sense considering I've seen some decrease in coloration of my Acros, as well. Thinking the GFO may be the issue, I removed it a few days ago. In your opinion, would it be a bad idea to run the system without filters and/or protein skimmer for the next day or so to build the nutrients back up a bit? This did all seem to start when I turned up the lights, but that was about the same time I added the GFO as well.

+1 on the above statements, if everything else in your tank is ok. Take baby steps, just step back a little bit and let things play out. I can't tell you how many times I would have one acro get upset, and I would read so much info online and jump to conclusions and change up things to fast. If you keep things stable and keep a close watch on your parameters, chances are it will eventually rebound.

On thing at a time. Don't change up too much at once.

Ok thanks! I won't change anything else for a while. It did look better yesterday! What is your opinion on running activated carbon? Like anything in this hobby, I get mixed reviews. There are some that say they run it all the time, some that run it once in a while, and some that don't use it at all.

Do it. Ill look for the scientific article if you want. Only about half a cup or less. Wont help with the current prob but will with long term health water clarity etc

The only down side I have read is danger of lateral line disease in fish.
