So after our second child has started toddling I have started getting back to reefing. So as a treat I threw away all my (expired) test kits. Starting again I followed the information of my favourite YouTube channel and went for the red sea algae pro test kit. So I was horrified when I first tested my simple tank seemed healthy my phosphate was low enough, my nitrates were off chart. I implemented a regime of consecutive water changes, hmm my nitrates were still off the chart. I went back to my original and bought a new salifert test. Now I am really confused after another water change salifert less than 5 red sea 100.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, do I just buy another test kit?

Did you do the high range test with the Red Sea? On the low range it's off the color wheel at 4ppm. Can you take a sample to an LFS for a test to confirm the result?

No, on the Red Sea the test vial looks about 5 ish from my past testing. If you will flip the card over it gives the instructions for the high range test. That should give you a better test result if they are indeed in the 5 to 10 range.

So you agree it’s around 5 in the picture, not 100 correct.

Apologies I should have stated the red sea was using dilution so high range test.
