I have a very sick spiny box puffer who's skin is peeling from his head and moving down his back. Also his mouth is open and his beak is completely exposed. It actually looks like he has nothing to cover his beak, like his lips have rotted away. Please help me!!!!

I can't help I don't know what I'm doing really, but the people who come here who can help are going to want to know more information. Tank parameters, when this started, and what sort of quarantine you ran on this fish if you did any to start you off. If you added anything new to the tank recently as well. The more information you can give them sooner the more they can help. Good luck.

Hi Donna,

That almost sounds like Brooklynella - though I'm not certain Brook affects puffers. The first thing I might try is an Acriflavine bath, such as Ruby Reef Rally. The other first thing I'd try would be calling @Humblefish, @HotRocks and @Big G.

Is it possible for you to post a photo of the puffer, showing the problem? Clear and under white lights would be best.

Definitely sounds like Brook I agree. A pic would be very helpful.

I also concur that it sounds like brook, and that a photo would help us with an ID.

That is actually not brook seeing the pic. This looks bacterial in nature.

Right eye is cloudy as well which is also indicative of a bacterial infection.

Do you have a QT?

This fish needs a 90 min bath in acriflavine, and treated with antibiotics in QT. Recommend using Furan-2, Kanaplex, and Metroplex.

I do agree that's probably a bacterial infection; whether or not brook was the precursor I do not know.

Of the meds you listed, Melafix would probably be your best bet for tonight. But if he's still alive tomorrow I highly recommend using this concoction: Seachem Kanaplex + Furan-2 + Seachem Metroplex.

Consider trying Sulfaplex + Neoplex. Works pretty good on infections on the head and mouth.

^^ This is actually probably a better suggestion. But I would still add Metroplex to it just in case brook is also in play here.

Ok I put a dose of melafix in the tank just now. I'm.not sure where to get the other medicines from but I will look around. He will still eat a bite or 2 of clams soaked in selcon about once a day.
