Im a fairly new aquarist so trying to learn as much as possible. You can see some of the basics about my tank in my sig:

Anyway tank has been up for 2 months, I purchased a tang from a LFS that brought with it ich and died the next day (it flashed next day and died, LFS had an ich outbreak and I was stupid enough to buy from him).

I went ahead and purchased a 25W emperor aquatics sterilizer to "help" control the ich. I know it doesnt cure it.

Here is my first question on setup:

I have it setup with 1/2 hose being fed from my MAG 7 - This is my first problem here, my temp in my tank has gone up by 1.5 degrees since adding the Mag 7 is there a different pump that doesnt add so much heat that I should use?

2. I have it setup so it feeds water from my drain retun in my sump to the UV and the cleaned water returns in the SAME sump area near my skimmer intake - Is this a bad idea? obviously you can understand why I would have it where the drain is but am in taking the same water and cleaning it constantly?

3. My main reason to purchase is to help my fish with ich so here is what I did, I took a gallon container, my Mag7 filled it in 16seconds, then I gated the flow down so it the container would fill up in around 120seconds (supposed to be between 55/93 GPH, and my mag 7 is rated at 500 gph at 4 feet of hose) - Again im a newbie and terrible in math, so does this make sense?

Results: my two fish that had ich from the yellow tang that died have recovered, but my tang replacement I purchased Kole Tang, although extremely happy, not aggressive and never flashed with major ich has some spots on its fins. It has not gotten worst but he has not completely healed after 2 1/2 weeks.

So should I change my setup to get better results? should I replace the pump to avoid the heat my mag7 causes? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

difficult to see what you need help on? all pumps add heat to the water. 1.5 degrees added as compared to what?

Since adding the Mag7 for the UV i've had a noticeable 1 degree rise constantly. I guess its not a big issue as it a stable temp that doesnt flactuate, its just that I went through all the trouble to set this tank up so I dont add heat to it, all LED, main pump set outside sump, MP10's...

What is your criteria here? How long has it been since you have seen spots? Have you researched the life cycle of C. Irritans?

Sorry for all the questions, but I need more information to help you.

I have viewed the stickied thread on this forum on Ich, and have done other research on the net. As far as spots they really never have gone away from my fish completely, the best it has gotten is where it has only spots on its fins now, it has been like this for a while. But I have noticed it trying to scratch itself on the sand and I know that even though the ich is not visible it might be a lot worst inside of the fish... He is very hungry all the time, playful, does not swim in distress (back in forth), but I am looking forward to the day where he is cured or developes an immunity. Non of my other fish have any symptoms.

My biggest question I wanted aswered is do I have my UV setup correctly to kill ich? It just sucks that its so little water moving through but its on 24/7

1. I use an eheim pump for my return and I have not noticed much of a rise in temp, but my tank uses a temp controller so it is always between 79 and 79.5. At any rate eheim are great pumps

2. Maybe not ideal, but it will work. I bet the thinking is that since the UV kills stuff in the water, outputting it to the skimmer will allow it to skim out the dead organisms. Sorry I don't have much experience with UV sterilizers

3. This does not do anything in helping your fish with ich

For your fish i would suggest a QT tank and treatment. Leave your display fish free for 8 weeks. There are many ich cures out there. Be sure to QT everything you get. I have found this is one of the best pieces of advice I have rec'd in this hobby.

Thanks I will check Eheim pumps out.

exactly my thinking and why I have the return near the skimmer.

Dont understand what you mean here? me gating GPH down? or you mean the UV in general? It will not cure ich but it can help reduce the free floating protozoa.

Agree that QT is the best way to go but its just not feasable for me :(

it's tough to treat ich in the main tank... i usually raise to water temp to try and get the ich spores to multiple and release themselves from the fish, then the UV can do some work. also, what help once and not sure why, we started doing water changes with natural filter sea water purchased from our lfs. they fishes began to heal themselves. i have no idea why it worked or endorsed it, but it worked that one time for me.
