If it turns out like the ORA mandarins who ate frozen & pellets, then it's worth every penny. Especially useful for getting a mandy thru QT when pods are not available.
Sorry Ray. I just saw this. Yes nothing you could have done really.
After passive QT I put mine in the dt as the won't eat in QT unless its feet up like a display with the normal foods.
The only thing it could possibly have been was internal parasite and to treat you have to get them eating first.
Yes they have a slime count but I don't belive that's the issue. More likely bad Harvest practice or a long term declining health issue. And possibly an internal parasite.
Don t be hard on yourself it's a tough critter to rear.

I would recommend using this as motivation to buy a bigger tank in the future when you are ready for it. They are difficult enough to keep in a large aquarium. The challenge is much harder in a smaller tank.
in a smaller tank the trick is to have a LOT of bugs. My tanks from the beginning were/are mandarin specific.

it can, you have to do it right and WE have to think with fish minds not people minds when we do it. Also Hospital tank is a term that need to be used more.
A mandy in qt, like some other fish, it also need to be conditioned initially to tank life. MAndys can be one of the hardest, along with pipefish. IMO and QT & conditioning need to be done differently.

A number of years back I heard a theory that the digestive systems of many mandarins would be irreparably damaged in collecting and shipping and it wouldn't matter how well they fed because at that point they would slowly waste away no matter what. I don't know if that was ever verified. Back of the envelope it sounds good but it could be total BS.

I am so sorry that your Mandarin died. It is my favorite fish ever! I had one in a tank a ex boyfriend left with me temporarily that turned into my new addiction. He was about 2 when I got him, finally lucked into his eating pellets then about 2 months ago he passed away. He would have been over 3- 3 1/2 yrs old. Miss hI'm greatly. Plan to try my luck on another mandarin soon. I pray I and you will be lucky the 2nd time around.
