Okay so here's the story i have had my setup for over 9 months no issues what so ever. I recently changed my light from a mariglow to a ai prime to have a stronger loght for my mag anemone and my corals seem to not be adjusting to well. Since doing this i keep getting an ammonia spike of around .1 i have had it for a couple of weeks now with no nitrate or nitrite i found a dead strom snail it died 1 day from getting it home i removed it thinking thats the reason for ammonia spike but 1 week later its still there i have done alot of watter changes of 50% to try and resolve amonia. I just wanted to know if dying corals can cause amonia spikes and could these coral be the cause the hammer is coming back nicely but the leather and the other one dose not seem to be. Thanks for any help and advice

Any dead, rotting tissue in the system will cause ammonia - including corals - but I don't know enough about toadstools to tell you if that guy's just cranky, or if this is a pull 'em out situation. Pretty sure someone else on the #reefsquad will, though.

I know from personal experience that leathers can be super fickle and can take a couple weeks to be happy again. I'm not familiar with the mariglow light but sometimes jumping to a high quality brand with higher par can shock the corals if they don't go through an acclimation period. Other than that I don't have much to offer but I'll call in the crew for you. #reefsquad
In the meantime they are going to want to see all of your parameters, PH, alk, cal, mag. Also please keep in mind that the sand sifter star you've got in there will deprive your sandbed of microfauna and end up starving after a bit.

Salinity is 1.023 ph is 8.2 i cant remember off hand my mag cal and alk but i get it tested weekly or fortnightly when i do water changes and test have been perfect only amonia if it cost me a coral to reduce my amonia so be it

Test you nitrate nitrite and ammonia please.

Yes taken just now i tested this morning ammonia .1 nitrite 0 and nitrate 0

The di removes more contaminates. Sometimes it's ok, like some tap water and bottled water, but often it's not.

Heres what I'm seeing. You have little to no corraline growth. No algae in the sump. Clean skimmer. Clean sump.

In the bad water thread I've worked on, thers generally a commonality of a lack of certain growths. The lack of of any algaes becomes the concern.
So either the tank is much younger than stated or somthing is killing micro fauna like corraline and common algaes. Corel's and fish have higher tolerance to these in general but long term expose usually takes its toll over time.

One of things those contaminats also kill is the bacteria needed for the cycle, resulting in no or very little precessing of ammonia.

I would highly reccomend picking up an inexpensive TDS meter and testing the top off and mixing water you're using. It should read zero.
In the mean time a bacterial additive will really help.

Got it.
You should still have more funk and stuff in the nooks and crannys going on in a 9 month old tank IMO.
And that's the concern. If there is none of that , the question becomes why.

I would test the source water.

Total dissolved solids meter. About $15 on Amazon.

And I'm not implying your being dishonest, it's what I see if this is actually the case.

Stunted cycle I call it. Not processing ammonia , effecting corals and inverts first generally.

Yeah thats fine im not being dishonest so honestly ide like to resulve this issue without casualtys hence asking about my corals so ill get a tds meter and test my incoming water and add a bacterial additive what would you recommend for that?

Dr Tims One and only is the best. But most any will do.

It's possible that the lfs just had a bad filter etc too.

What percentages is the light at btw. There should be no correlation however.
