Good evening Mr. Randy
I am Portuguese and I am in love with my reef aquarium
For this reason I sent a water sample from my aquarium for Triton to be analyzed
I was very worried because it was detected a value of 20.26 mg / L copper my aquarium has 900Lt !!
Much read your article here My Triton Testing Results: By Randy Holmes-Farley - REEFEDITION
and also Mr. Richard Harker Article Here Feature Article: Is It Really In The Water? A Critical Reexamination Of Toxic Metals In Reef Tanks ? Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog
with the explanations of Mr. Richard I was even more confused because I have in my tank
1 Stenopus hispidus
1 Mespilia globulus
1 Porites cylindrica yellow
And also some Acropora according to Mr. article. Richard with the copper values in my aquarium would be impossible to keep these animals and they are in perfect health.
Please Mr. Can you help me
Thank U
Best wishes
Sorry my English but used Google translator
Pedro

Is it 20.26 mg/l or 20.26 ug/l?

At 20.26 mg/l you wouldn't keep fish alive I'm pretty sure that equates to 20.26ppm

If it is ug/l 20.26 would convert to .02026 ppm which makes more sense.

It is not clear exactly how high copper needs to be to be a problem. My tank had about 13 ppb years ago and I noticed no particular problem.

So I wouldn't panic, but I would look for sources of copper.

Do you use tap water or any metal parts in the setup?

Thanks for reply
I use RO water and the filters and membrane it’s ok after I receive the result of Triton I change the ion exchanger resin in mi RO system and I use Redox and after 3 days I make a change of 15% water of mi tank like recommend Triton but I use NSW because I cannot say for sure the quality of my salt.
In mi setup I have 1 wave maker I observe and I sink the pump its ok like the return pump
For next week I change more 15% water of mi tank and I need equilibrate a few more parameters like strontium, lithium, molibidenio and manganese L and I after I send again the water for Triton I’m not shore if its correct please tell me yours opinions
Sorry for mi English
Regards
Thanks

My concern is whether that water might be locally contaminated with copper from nearby industry.

hello thanks for your reply Mr.Randy Holmes

the issue is before the exchange of water because they are used NSW after being detected copper in my tank since it does not have much confidence in salt that was using. to use the NSW I first filter it using 3 filter socks 50.5 and 1 micron then I pass it by media anti-phosphat later by activated carbon and in the end I use UV. I think so eliminate 90% of the possibilities of the water not be good thought also still use something like the redox

thanks

Did you test the final product seawater for copper? It could get through the filtering you are doing.

I test whith salifert cooper test because its only the test i
have :( you now another test its more good ?
In portugal its very expensive make a water analise in professional lab :(

The problem is that level is so low, hobby test kits will not pick it up, only triton. I tried several test kits on water that had double that level. They all showed no copper.

Sorry I'm sure that's not what you prefer to hear. Do you by chance thaw frozen foods with tap water? That played a part in my issue.
