HELP!!!

Alright here is the long story on my tank and the EPIC crash that I still have not been able to over come!


Everything was great with my 72g Bow front tank, I have two EHIM canister filters (yes I know not the best idea for salt, but it’s what i got) a Berlin Pro Series Skimmer and two hydro wave makers with a controller. Salt and Temp are very controlled and in proper parameters. This has been up and running for over 9 months and everything is going great!


Stocked, at the time were multiple fish (Yellow Tank, Chromis, Clown Fish, a few peppermint shrimp, Scarlett crabs, snails, Ect) Then I got some Cyanobacteira. I normally never like to put “chemicals†in my tanks but this time I chose to do so (Chemi-Clean). I made sure I pumped enough O2 to avoid a lack of it and the medicine worked great, I did a 30 Gallon flush after the 48 hour recommendation and everything was going good. Until the next day and all he fish were dead and on the bottom of the tank, not floating.


After talking with my LFS, we have gone over a ton of ideas as to why no new fish can be introduced, O2 levels (tested at 437), we even thought it might be stray voltage, so I got a grounding probe and then what else do you do to test the water, put a fish in right? with in hours if not over night they all die! Since then (about 3 months) I have just been doing water changes on a tank with no fish just a few Zoo’s that now won’t open and a trumpet coral that is seaming to do just fine though out all of this.


I was given one idea this last weekend and it was to introduce new bacteria such as “bio-Spire†to see if that will help the zoo’s to open and to basely start over as if the tank has never cycled… What are you thoughts please, please, please!




Long story is what is wrong and why can’t I get any fish to live longer than a day?

I am pretty sure that chemi clean can knock out your beneficial bacteria. With no denitrifying bacteria the ammonia and then nitrite will kill the fish. At this point you probably need to completely clean the tank (sand bed etc..) and put the tank through a cycle purposely with a piece of shrimp or a cheap fish (ya I said it, a fish..). After you test it through a cycle add one or two fish at a time a couple of weeks apart and you should be good. I am not nearly as experienced as a lot of the guys and gals here but that is how I would attack the problem. Good luck man and hang in there!

Yes, I have checked all that i can test for and everything is at Zero, That i why i am thinking, it is not what is in my water but what is not in my water and i am thinking the bacteria is what i am missing....

Many, many people use chemiclean with good results, it does not kill your biological filter. Read the reviews on MarineDepot sight. I have used it and I know a number of people have used it with success.

My suggestion is to take your canisters off line for good, add more flow and wait a month to add more fish (just in case disease is involved). Check for ammonia, and nitrates (get your own test kit if you do not have one) and proceed with your routine water changes and add some decent charcoal like chemipure. Get some Microbacter7 and follow the directions.

I doubt it was the chemiclean, as ive dosed chemiclean several times not for cyano, but to perk up zoas. What are you water parameters? (Ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc ) How much chemiclean did you use ? just a little over the recommended amount will cause damage.

so if this is the case now a what do i do....?

I am almost ready to just turn the heater up to 85 and re-cure the rock and start over, after "baking" everything it should be good right?

Wait, what do you mean by dosing twice , you dosed for 2 days straight ? also how many little spoon fulls did you dose? I wouldnt bake anything , your tank will be back soon. seems to me you might of over dosed.

No, why do something so drastic.

You still have some inverts and corals right?

You already know canisters may not be ideal and unless you religiously maintain them and clean them detritus builds up which contributes to nitrates which contributes to cyanobacteria. Get rid of the canisters you have a skimmer. Make sure you have enough rock and flow, use RO water, take a deep breath and proceed.

i did the recommended dose of two Mini spoon full's flushed it with the 30g water change and then did it a second time. Then everything died the next day...

I have more than enough flow, I am sure of that, I am just scared if I trash the filters i will have only a skimmer to do the dirty work... Do you think that would be enough for filtration, I am sure it would for now, there are no fish in the tank.

Have you changed ALL media in your filters? Are you running carbon in them?

At the time yes i have cleaned and replaced all the media, over the last 3 months i have also replaced the carbon a few times in each of the canisters.
