I’m in a bit of a bind. My upgrade tank is coming Monday and I plan on keeping my current tank running while the new one cycles, I’m not transferring any sand water or live rock and I’m starting fresh with new saltwater and some established live rock from another trusted system, my problem is that my current tank looks to have a Dino problem and I’m starting to get a film on the surface of my water even with nice agitation so idk how I should go about transferring my livestock and corals over. Will dip kill the Dino? Should I just set up a quarantine for all my live stock instead of keeping my current tank running while the new one cycles?? Definitely in need of some help. Thank you in advance

I wouldn’t worry about the Dino’s. Your new tank will get Dino’s anyway. The stage will pass. If your starting fresh I would keep all the fish in their current tank and transfer them slowly over after your cycle ends. Don’t dump them all in at once. Be sure to allow time for the bacteria population to increase as you add fish over time.
Why are you not using your current sand, water and rock?

That’s what I plan to do with my fish. And I’m upgrading from a 25 to a 100 so I really jsut wanted to start fresh and get new rock and make the scape I want. I’m also going bare bottom so no need to transfer sand. I’m adding live rock from my buddies tank that’s well established and pest free rock from the sump so that should speed up the cycle a bit I’m also going to add some bacteria as well. Just nervous about the Dino I never had them in my tank that’s been running for over a year until now.

I would use the current water to help with the cycle. I just did a tank upgrade from a 40B to a 75 gal. I used the same water & live rock. I did not use the old sand. Everything went pretty well. As far as the dino’s, they will come & algae you just have to get past that stage in your tank life [emoji846]

beneficial will be SOME tank water, definitely rock and liquid bacteria ( Dr. Tims or fritz turbo 900) great accelerators. As for film, focus current towards the surface and one towards the bed to create a gyre effect and that should break up the film. Add Very slowly as you have the advantage of a running tank on the side.

You may not have much of a cycle if you're adding enough live (fresh) rock. One question - how do you know that the rock in your sump is 'pest free' - or the rock in your friends tank? I wouldn't be worried about the Dinos - if they are on the water surface - you should be able to pick them up by running a paper towel over the surface with the pump off. (However - I dont think you should need to do that)

They are in my moms cousins sump and he’s a very trustworthy reefer when I saw the rock it was spotless and he’s been in the hoppy over 30 years. I already set the tank up with my dry rock I’m going to add the live rock today. My other tank I’m just going to transfer livestock then breakdown and sell.
