Plug a 1" hole in a water bin

I have a 55 gallon water barrel that has a 1" hole in it that once had a uniseal in place. I have since removed the uniseal, and would like to plug this hole.

I was thinking of finding a piece of plastic, like thin plexiglass and caulking it in place, hopefully sealing it to where no water leaks out.

Is there a better way to do this?

I would have left in the uniseal and jammed a small piece of pipe in there with a cap on the end.

Hmmmm, didn't think of that one. I have plenty more of those uniseals. That would certainly be easier.
