Plumbing a 90G tank, need help understanding

I am planning an upgrade and looking at a semi-custom 90. I'm not sure I totally understand the plumbing configuration I will need with the new set up and looking for a little insight from the experts on R2R.

First, I'm pretty sure that I want to go with a Herbie style of overflow. With a 90 gallon tank and roughly a return pump sized at 10x turnover what size holes / bulkheads should the tank have for the my return to the sump?

Second, within the internal overflow there should be three holes correct? Two for the drain and one for return?

Third, what size hole / bulkhead should the return be sized at?

Lastly, what would be the recommended size of the sump for this system with 10x turnover??

I would use at least 1" drains myself. 1 1/2" I think wouldn't be justified and they would take up more room than needed in the overflow. What kind of return pump are you using? That will determine the size of the plumbing you should use on your return. 3/4" - 1" is probably what you'll be looking at.

With a herbie overflow and drilled return, then yes 3 holes in overflow.

The sump size: go as big as you can. Is the sump going in the stand?

Personally I see no need for multiple standpipes and complicating what is a very simple siphon, I prefer to keep it simple and have yet to have a problem with my Stockmans in over 25 years or reefkeeping, 10+ on my present 100G system.

Eric thank you for your insight! Yes the sump will go in the stand an I will have someone make the stand for me so I dimensionally have my options with respect to stand / sump size. The information I have been able to research on the web regarding the overflow / drain has me really confused on the sizing on the of the overflow pipes.

One 1" overflow is capable of 900gph at its optimum. You can run 2 1" overflows, one being the emergency outlet.
And use one 1" return line.
Being that you want 10x your DT turnover then you'll be looking for a 900gph pump after headloss.
GPM/GPH Flow based on PVC Pipe Size, ie, How much water can flow through Sch 40 Pvc Pipe Size 1/2" 3/4" 1" 1.5" 2" 2.5" 3" 4" 6"

I have a 70 gal rimless with three drilled holes. I use an Eheim 1262 which I have throttled back to about 500GPH and a 1" return line would be fine. I use a 1.5" just because. For the drains, I have a 1" in full siphon (throttled with a gate valve), and a 1.5" emergency (no valve). I have the water level in the overflow about 1/4" below the bottom of the teeth, and it is absolutely silent at 500GPH.
