Yeah thank you, I was just looking for a general idea of what others have used for their systems.Hi Kasey. I think it depends on how many things you plan to run off a manifold and how many places you want to be able to stop flow or control flow. I have 3 in a small 40g tank with a 40g sump. But I run a very simple system. When I had a 120g DT and a 40g DT tied together in a 60g sump/refugium I had quite a few more gate valves and unions.
After the return pump to control flow (if you don't have a DC pump with variable speeds)
before the return pump to stop flow if you need to service or replace the pump
along a manifold for a reactor (or 2 or even 3 if you are into using them)
as a pressure relief to flow some water back to the other end of the sump
at a spare pipe that can be used for a hose when taking water out of the system for a water change
And I'm sure others can think of more!
