So i am going to be getting a new custom tank from miracles (300g display and like 70g sump i think) but I am a little unsure how many holes i want drilled. I know I need one for the drain and one for return, but any advantages for have two for drain (backup) or two returns? Do I need any other special holes drilled if i want automated dosing, temperature control, uv etc? Not really sure what goes where. I have a 50g i've had running for a year with lots of healthy SPS/LPS but i dont have any special controllers and all my filters/skimmers are hang-on. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

So what are you thinking for an overflow (herbie, durso, bean)? Regardless at that size tank you'll want two holes for drain to sump and two for retrim from sump at a minimum.

This, we need to know what type of overflow you are getting and what kind of drain setup you would like to run (Durso - 1 Hole, Herbie - 2 Holes, Modified Bean Animal - 3 Holes).

On that tank, really any tank, I would rule out the Durso Drain and focus on either the Herbie or Modified Bean Animal. 1.5" bulkheads for the drain setup and dual 1" for the returns.

Any thoughts on the three? From a quick glance the herbie looks good. Bean almost seems a little excessive but i have no idea. Also just a standard internal overflow box

Being an internal overflow box I might stick with the Herbie (Two drains) myself a triple drain makes for a HUGE internal overflow box

Are you planning on running your return(s) in the overflow as well or run them through the back of your tank?

Just finished with two main drains plus a hope-to-never-use emergency drain on a 150. Lots of great flow... I would tend to think you would want as much flow as you can get in a 300. Best wishes!

I think @JoshH is offering some solid insight here. It would help to show us what you're working with so far?
