Setting up my basement sump and wanted to know what you guys think about running my three drain lines (main drain, and 2 back up drain lines from my ghost overflow) from the main tank into one 3” pipe instead of running 3 1.5” pipes to the sump. This would save me much needed space. It would also make my life a little easier.

The risk of merging the lines is that if the end of the run, i.e. the single pipe, clogs, then they all clog. However, clogging a 3" pipe is not terribly likely. I would put a union on all four pipes in the junction, just to ease troubleshooting and maintenance.

That said, if one of the overflow lines is supposed to be a siphon, then you will need to figure out the fluid dynamics to make that happen...

Build a horizontal header behind the tank. One end of it will be an elbow down, and make a trap for the full siphon line. This will make sure that you never get air up into this line. The other end will be the one that goes down to your basement. In the middle, will tees for your two other drains. BTW, one 1.5" pipe has more cross sectional area (and flow) than three 3/4" lines do....so it's pretty unlikely that the header will ever clog up.

I see you're thinking about running a 3" pipe. How big of a system is this? It seems like overkill.

Thanks, good idea.

This is for a 240gal tank
it's dead silent also.
