Hi all, this is my first post and I'm new to reefing. I'm in the process of setting up my first tank. I purchased a custom built tank second hand (although it has never been used - the previous owner, a reefer with another larger (8') tank set up, had this made as a second tank, but then didn't get the time to complete it, so decided to sell it.) The plumbing pictured below is as I got it and how he intended to use it. For reference, the tank is 1500 x 60 x 60 (5' x 2' x 2') 550 litres or 140g. The sump (also shown below) is 270 litres or 70g. I'll be using an Ecotech Vectra M1 return pump (7500 lph or 2000gph).

My question's are - is it suitable? Will there be much noise with a straight standpipe? Having done some research I was wondering if I should change it to a durso standpipe, leaving the smaller pipe as a straight emergency overflow. What about the lower section (shown)? The water will fall to a 90˚ bend before splitting to the 2 outlets into filter socks. Will that work ok?

Thanks
Michael

That's a herbie overflow. That's all I use on my tanks now. It's basically a no fuss drain and extremely quiet. Make sure the drain pipe into the sump is about 1" below the water level while it's running. That will help insure it flushes air out of the drain and you don't get any gurgling noises. If it's above the water you'll get splashing. If it's too deep it won't be able to flush the air out.

You need to put 2 90s on that shorter pipe. The larger also needs to be shorter (lower) and have 2 90s. See my video. I assume you are going over the back for the return. With that return pump full siphon is the only way to go. You might need a valve on the return pump as you might have too much return flow. With that tank, the weir might not be able to flow enough water to keep the full siphon fed.

Thanks - the return isn't visible in the photos. It's plumbed through the base in the opposite rear corner. Narrower pipe than the intake, I think it's about 1" or maybe 1 1/4".

Also do not glue the standpipe drains into the bulkheads. Just friction fit them. If you already have it is ok though.
