Plumbing Question

Getting my new tank all set up but the only piece I am missing is the 1.5" gate valve, stores only have ball valves. So the question is, will I be fine with using a ball valve instead of a gate? I know BRS and other places have them but they are almost $30 bucks and if they are not 100% necessary then I would prefer to save money where I can.

I've always used ball valves, mainly because of the cost and they are readily available at home depot.
Never had a problem with it myself, however, I have seen people post about the valves being extremely tough to open/shut when they haven't been used in a long time. one of which resulted in a forum member busting an acrylic sump if memory serves me right.

Ball valves tend to stick if left alone for a while. I would try to find the gate valve if possible. They are also more tune-able than ball valves.

Cheap ball valves tend to stick (and leak). Investing in a good quality one is well worth it in my view.

I've always used ball valves on my previous tanks. Never had a problem. It was difficult to get just the right amount of flow, but they worked. My latest tank I decided to get gate valves to see what all the fuss was about. Boy am I glad I went with gate valves. Much more control.

Its only purpose is going to be adjusting the flow on my main drain line.

A gate valve would be your best bet for adjusting flow. You will be able to get finer adjustment over a ball valve.
