Hi all, I have an Aqua One Mini Reef 160L tank, it has all the stock plumbing from aqua one still. It makes insane amounts of noise, and is starting to drive me crazy. Back before I changed out the stock skimmer the noise of the old skimmer pump drained out (pun not intended) most of the water gurgling/drainage noise. However since I've gotten my new skimmer, it's become a lot more noticeable. My skimmer isn't even silent, and has an AC pump, so I want to get the plumbing sorted our before I start switching to all DC pumps.
I've put a ball valve on the return pump line, and it's currently turned so that the return pump is reduced by about 50%.
What are my options? Ideally I'm thinking turning the durso into a Herbie would be best. Every time I change out the filter sock I have to remove part of the overflow as the pipe goes into the filter sock (not like a Red Sea Reefer sump). A Herbie overflow would mean this would be a tight squeeze, but I'm willing to try that. Alternatively any other ideas are welcome, or if you have any sump modification ideas :)

You answered your question, dursos are noisy and that sound is just air getting sucked in the pipe. Also sounds like water falling, so your water must be falling a few inches from the overflow weirs. This is just based off sounds, but going herbie should definitely help.

New pumps and skimmers are always noisy for the first 30 days are so. Once they break-in, IMO they get quieter

Agreed. After about the second month of my new skimmer its noise dropped drastically. It's still noticeable, but with an AC pump and no foam or anything between it and the glass, I'm not expecting it to be silent. Just the issue of finding a DC pump with a controller that'll fit the skimmer lol
