I have a used 125 gallon that has been drilled with 3 holes that are for 3/4 bulkheads. Using 2 for drains and 1 for the return, will I have enough flow for a fish only set up? I've been advised to drill larger holes but I dont want to go that route. My other option would be to plug the holes and run cannisters.

I’m actually building a 40b and have the same question. I plan on using the eshopps M overflow which has a 1” drain. Not sure what size bulkheads I need or how big i should drill for 3/4 or 1/2 return.

I used canisters in the past but I ended up really regretting not using a sump as it’s a lot more versatile for upgrades and makes hiding equipment extremely easy. After moving to a sump I noticed it was a lot easier to keep my systems clear of nitrates and phosphates. Canister tend to be Detritus traps nmo. As for flow I rely on wave makers. Filtration circulation is a different beast. It needs to be fast enough to pull junk from the display but slow enough for your filters to strip it from the water column. Some say 10x turnover of your tank but I tend to limit my sump circulation to a speed in which my skimmer is rated for maximum filtration.
You can build a decent sump for cheap right now as well because petco is running their dollar per gallon sale. Hope this was helpful
