I'm going to go ahead and replace the old bulkheads on this tank I'm working on, and should I go SLIP x SLIP style or get threaded ends? I'm leaning towards threaded for obvious reasons. The former owner had it plumbed DOWN to 1/2" in the tank to I assume fit the return sprays, and then down to 3/4" from the sump....is there any reason to do that? I know pressure increases along with flow rate when you par down the diameter (? I think?). There won't be that much distance, the total return line will be about MAX 6' so I don't believe head pressure will be an issue. Ditto on the drains. Thanks.

Also - schedule 80 vs. schedule 40.....I know 80 is for higher PSI, but my question is does schedule 80 have different diameters for the bulkhead fittings? Could I use sch. 80 bulkheads and sch. 40 pipe? Is the opening the same? I'm having issues finding all the parts i need in sch. 40. Thanks.

I really just wanna PEX pipe this whole thing and be done with it. lol.

Tubing/ Piping is Outside Diameter until you get to 6" pipe. Then it is ID

I believe the difference you are talking about is PVC as compared to CPVC

The size of the hole required is different between schedule 40 and 80 bulkheads. You can use schedule 40 pipe in schedule 80 fittings and vise versa.

So if it's calling out schedule 40 1" bulkheads I could not use sch. 80 bulkheads. Correct?

But if I wanted to use a sch. 80 gate valve, it would be fine to connect to 1" PVC.

The difference between schedule 40 and schedule 80 is the wall thickness. Schedule 80 has a thicker wall and thus a smaller inside diameter than the equivalent schedule 40.

Most likely not but it does not seem like the OD of bulkheads falls under a standard like the pipe and fitting dimensions

Yes

I use schedule 40 on al plumbing jobs.
I'm going to do the same just for "safety" for now. I wanted to use fancy PVC (colored) but with the cost I'll have in adding gate valves and new bulkheads I might just do it as cheap as possible. This all started because I wanted to hard plumb the tank instead of using flex pipe used by the previous owner.

Just be careful CPVC comes NPS measured ID, and CTS measured OD. Also if mixing and matching need the correct primer, and glue. As to bulkheads just go to hardware store

Well Pex should be OK. But was watching an interesting thread here where he was experiencing deaths and mayhem in his tank. Got his water analyzed. It was tin. Apparently tin is used to make pvc flexible. Who would have thought
