Plumbing Reactor/Chiller/etc. Effluent Directly to Return Line

Hey Guys,

I’m in the middle of setting up my new Red Sea Reefer 170. I had originally hoped to keep the plumbing and sump simple, but after buying a Clarisea and realising I had some annoying space limitations, I’m going to have to get a bit more creative with my plumbing than I had originally intended. I figured I may as well try my first hard-plumbed return manifold while I was at it so I can plumb in things like my chiller, carbon reactor and maybe an algae reactor later down the line if the pump can hack it. I’m running it off an Octo Varios 2.

My question is with regards to plumbing these pieces of equipment into the manifold. My brief foray into researching this topic leads me to believe most people spill their reactor effluents straight back into their sumps. I find this odd as it would seem to me you’d get a lot of water recycling through the reactors/chiller etc. multiple times instead of them being fed water which had overflowed from the DT. I was thinking of trying to directly plumb their outlet streams directly back into the return line headed towards the DT and have valves at either end to isolate them for maintenance. Just wanted to know if anyone else had done this, or had any thoughts as to this idea? There might be a really obvious reason I don’t want to do this so would love some advice!

It won’t work. I’ve tried it multiple times. Just something to do with the pressures, you can’t force water through the separate lines and then back in.
 
Even if you could get it to work, there’d be no way to visually see when the canister was getting clogged up. I personally prefer a separate pump for canisters/reactors.
