Hey so I just bought this used tank and I’m looking for plumbing suggestions. It looks like it’s set up for dual internal beam animal to me, and that sounds like overkill to me.

I had a couple ideas, I could use bulkhead is plugs to plug up 3 holes on one of the sides and run a single bean animal down to the sump.

Or I could plug up the 4 holes in the middle and on the 2 outside bulkheads (not including the returns) I could get a couple of those single bulkhead eschopps ghost overflows

But I have never done this before so I wanted to get some of y’all input on how you would do it

Thanks!

If it were me I would keep the three inside bulkheads for overflows and the two outside ones for return lines.

I would also 100% remove, clean (the glass) and replace with all new bulkheads.

Both sets of 3? Altogether there are 6 holes for overflows and 2 for returns

Realistically there are already 6 holes for overflows. You can set it up so that two of them are only used in case of an emergency and tune the other four to run dead silent.

Use the two most outside bulkheads as overflows. There really are a limitless number of ways to set this up, but I would say that having more overflow options is better than less. I would also say that all of those bulkheads should be replaced so you know they are new, glass cleaned and have a far less likely chance of leaking.

Ok I’m gonna get started removing these bulkheads, the glass looks a little chipped and worn underneath, how can I sure that up to make sure it doesn’t leak?

Buy some rubbing alcohol and clean both the inside and the outside of where the bulkheads seat. Make sure the new bulkheads are tight but done overtighten and you should be fine.

When you water test your system you will see if there are any leaks, but if you clean and tightest the bulkheads properly you should be alright.

And if that's paint on the glass, I would use a razor and remove it.

It may be a little difficult to "tune" the returns with so many. You will want a return in each overflow, but you really don't need an open and a safety standpipe in each overflow imo. I would probably put an open standpipe in one overflow and an emergency pipe in the other and plug two of the holes. Lots of options. I have had both bean animal and herbie, they both work.
