Hey Guys,

Starting my first reef tank (3ft with Sump) got a brand new tank from a friend they didn’t use themselves. It has an internal overflow with one drilled hole at the base.

As it will be on a hardwood floor, not sure if a Durso Standpipe will be the safest approach, but not sure what the best alternative is as there is not room to drill another hole at the bottom of the overflow.

Appreciate any suggestions on this!

I suppose you could consider removing the current weir, plugging the hole and using a different type of overflow if you don't want to drill - and you don't want to do a durst?

Only reason was I’ve seen it can be risky to run a durso as there is no emergency line in case of a clog, concerned about potential flooding. I am happy to consider drilling but not sure where with weir I have, unless I should remove it completely as you suggested.

You can look into doing a durso and then doing an autoaqua smart level outlet. Install the sensor in the overflow section and connect your return to the outlet the sensor leads to, and if water gets up to the sensor, it will shut the outlet off preventing a flood.

Here is a link.

I like the sensor idea - I do not like the failure likelyhood. Just remove the weir - plug the hole - and use a different overflow? Would be my suggestion

I did look at those, hard to find any in stock, are these very reliable though?

would best method be here to get a razor and cut through silicone? With plugging the hole would a capped off bulkhead handle the pressure or should I patch it with glass?

The problem with durso or any single pipe system is not the lack of emergency drain but the noise, imo.
You could plug the hole on bottom and drill up higher for a ghost overflow. Or silicone a piece over the hole in the overflow and drill 2 holes.
Personally, since the overflow box is already there, and removing it may mess with silicone around bottom glas, and cleaning up the glass where overflow is siliconed to now. Would sooner leave that bottom hole and drill another hole in back, inside your overflow, to run herbie style drain. Might as well drill for return on the opposite side of tank while you’re at it

I would cap it off with glass myself

I think that may be the way I go about it, will use the bottom hole as the main line, and have a L running off the back to act as emergency, and will ultimately sit right above the main line (side on rough view: https://ibb.co/5xhr3kH) Thanks for the suggestion

I only had a Durso Clog once, and that was due to a Bubbletip Anemone, getting past the Weir, and clogging the pipe. I made a long strainer out of plastic mesh, for that. I lost an entire tank while on vacation, due to a Syphon, over the top, type loosing its prime. Never Again on that setup. I even had someone, supposedly checking on the tank while I was away.
