Plumbing

There are only a couple of reasons I can think of to put a ball valve on my return line.
  1. I chose a pump that is too big and the overflow can't handle the full flow.
  2. I have a manifold and may want to divert some of the pump's flow from the display equipment.
  3. I have an external pump and I want to be able to remove it with union ball valves.
For 90% of people, there is no reason to have a ball valve on your return line.

I have a gate on both my returns (2 aquariums) which helps control the flow, but isn’t totally necessary. An adjustable DC pump would basically do the same thing.
you definitely want a gate on the main drain, or things can get noisy

Sorry I meant on the drain, I know with dc pumps no valve needed for return , but I have a single durso drain , would I still need a gate/ball to make it quiet like the herbie & bean? Or does it keep itself quite and I can just adjust flow/water level with dc pump only

IMO you’re going to want a gate valve for fine tuning water level in the overflow rather than relying solely on the rate of a dc pump.

It's not popular to put a restriction of any kind when dealing with a single drain. There is a lot of potential for blockage.

If you are going to do that make sure you have a good strainer on the drain intake.
Thanks, yes my first plan was to just put a egg crate on the hole of durso and checking every few weeks & changing the drain hose every 2-3 years
